Travel in your country of residence
Interrail Passes offer travellers the chance to experience the best of rail travel abroad — to step away from the familiar and experience life in a new place. Travellers who live in one of the 33 European countries included in our Pass Network will often start and end their journeys in their country of residence. If you would like to make any journeys within your country of residence during your Interrail trip, there are a few rules to keep in mind.
A Global Pass is usually valid for travel within your country of residence during one outbound journey and one inbound journey (with multiple train transfers included). Though many travellers use their inbound and outbound journeys at the start and end of their trip, you are free to use them as you like, on any travel day in the overall validity period of your Pass. Remember that you have until midnight on each travel day to travel on trains for which your Pass is valid. If you need more than the allocated outbound and inbound journeys, you can always buy additional point-to-point tickets directly from the relevant rail carrier.
Note: If you live in a country included in our Pass Network, you cannot use a One Country Pass to travel in your country of residence.
Do you live in a country outside our Pass Network? If so, these rules do not apply to you.
Want to travel in your country of residence with a mobile Pass?
If you live in a country that is part of our Pass Network and travel with a mobile Pass, the Rail Planner app will automatically recognise an outbound or inbound journey. You are free to use these journeys in your country at any stage of your Pass’ validity.
If the train ride you're adding to your Pass is considered an inbound or outbound journey, you'll get a pop-up telling you that you will be using one of the two available inbound or outbound journeys. You will need to approve this before you can add the train journey to your Pass.
In some instances, travellers may wish to travel through their country of residence on the way from one country to another. In these cases, the Rail Planner app will also apply one inbound or outbound journey to this travel day, even if you will not stop there or leave the train.
In an effort to improve the travel experience of mobile Pass holders, we may, from time to time and at our sole discretion, conduct pilots that extend the number of journeys allowed in your country of residence. If your country of residence is eligible, your mobile Pass will automatically have this extra allowance, and it will be reflected in the Rail Planner app once you've added your Pass. You can also check our Pass Conditions of Use for more information.
Want to travel in your country of residence with a paper Pass?
As you use your paper Pass, you will mark your travel days in the travel calendar of the Pass. If you live in one of 33 countries in our Pass Network, you should mark the dates of your inbound and outbound journeys in the special box in the My Trip section that comes with your Pass. Keep in mind that the outbound trip to leave your country of residence doesn’t necessarily have to come before your inbound journey, depending on how you planned your trip.
Change of currency
You cannot change the currency once you have a Pass in your cart. Remove the Pass, and then change the currency on the website header.
