About Us
It was never just a rail ticket.
Our story began in 1959, when countries across post-war Europe came together to make it easier for people to cross the continent’s borders by train. The Pass they created promised a new way of travelling. There was no fixed route. No fixed destinations. The journey itself was the point.
Travellers took it from there. They met in dining cars, crossed paths at stations and swapped recommendations somewhere between one stop and the next. Friendships formed. Perspectives shifted.
Today, Interrail is one of the most iconic ways to travel through Europe. We’re name-checked in song lyrics, used as the setting for meet-cutes in films and have been part of millions of trips since our start.
Why it matters now
Today, there’s growing pressure to fit more into every trip. More photos at famous landmarks. More bucket list items ticked off. Holidays have become something to perform rather than experience, with routes crafted by algorithms and trips measured by how many destinations a traveller manages to rush through. There's rarely time to get to know a place, or the people who live there.
Interrail stands for something different.
We believe in travelling deeper, not just further. In visiting the cities you’ve heard of and the villages you haven’t. In staying somewhere an extra day because you have a hunch it will be worth it. In striking up a conversation with the person next to you. In taking the slower route.
When this happens, travellers return home with new friendships, greater confidence and fresh ways of seeing the world.
We call this The Interrail Effect.
It's the idea that the deeper you travel, the more the journey will change you.
It begins with a conversation in a sleeper compartment. Or a missed train connection that leads to a story you tell over and over again. It happens when you go beyond the obvious hotspots, stay longer in places when it feels right and experience Europe not as a list of countries to collect, but as a continent filled with unique languages, landscapes and cultures.
Cross borders. Travel deeper. Return home seeing the world and yourself differently.
