Travel in your country of residence
Do you live in a country outside our Pass network? If so, these rules do not apply to you.
Interrail Passes offer travellers the chance to step away from the familiar and see life somewhere new. Every trip starts somewhere in Europe. If you live in one of the countries in our Pass network, that's often your local train station. It's usually where your trips ends, too. If you're travelling with a Global Pass and you'd like to use it in your country of residence, there are a few rules to keep in mind.
A Global Pass includes one trip out of your country of residence and one trip back in. Each of these trips can include as many connections as you need to cross the border. Many travellers use them at the start and end of their trip, but you're free to use them on any travel day within your Pass's validity period (usually one month, starting from your first travel day). Remember that you have until 23:59 (11:59 p.m.) on each travel day to board any train your Pass covers. If you need more than these two trips, you can always buy standard train tickets directly from the train operator.
Note: If you live in a country included in our Pass network, you can't use a One Country Pass to travel in your country of residence.
Want to travel in your country of residence with a mobile Pass?
If you live in a country that's part of our Pass network and travel with a mobile Pass, the Rail Planner app will automatically recognise when a train ride counts as your trip out of your country of residence or your trip back in. You're free to use these two trips at any point during your Pass's validity period.
If the train ride you're adding to your Pass counts as one of these trips, you'll see a pop-up letting you know. You'll need to approve this before you can add the train journey to your Pass.
In some instances, travellers may wish to travel through their country of residence on the way from one country to another. If you do, the Rail Planner app will also count this as one of your two trips, even if you don't stop there or leave the train.
From time to time, we may run pilots that give Pass holders extra trips in their country of residence. If your country of residence is eligible, your mobile Pass will automatically get these extra trips, and you'll see them in the Rail Planner app once you've added your Pass. You can also check our Pass Conditions of Use for more information.
Want to travel in your country of residence with a paper Pass?
As you use your paper Pass, remember to mark your travel days in the travel calendar. It's important to fill in each date on the day you travel before you board your first train (filling it in ahead of time could cost you a travel day if your plans change).
If you live in one of the countries in our Pass network, you'll also need to mark the dates of your trip out of your country of residence and your return trip. You'll find a special box for these in the My Trip section of your Pass. Keep in mind that these trips don't have to be in order. Depending on your route, you might travel into your country of residence before you travel out of it.
